Mattress Topper vs. Avacado. . . A comparison
"First, I would wish they would let us review by 1/2 stars. I would actually give it 4. 5 stars. I hope you find my review worth a read, considering I will go into some detail. I recently bought a new high-end king bed because my previous bed had a divot where I slept. I am about 5'9", 175, and a side-sleeper at age 65. I wish that everyone, who reviews mattresses, or toppers, would include that information. It is important, and relevant. Now for a little backstory, before I get totally into the review. I was used to a traditional innerspring mattress, and hated my new, hybrid memory-foam bed because I sunk in, and it was weird trying to turn over. It was the "plush" version, so I decided to use my one trade to get the same mattress, but the firm version. The problem is that it was SO firm, that my old shoulder was not happy every morning. It caused a lot of pain. My solution, after stumbling upon the fact that latex bounced back quickly, was that I did A LOT of research on dunlop, and talalay, latex toppers to compare various companies' products. I ultimately decided on the MattressTopper soft 3" Latex Topper with the GlacioTex cooling cover. I had actually called Brooklyn Bedding to ask some questions, not realizing that they were related to MattressTopper. The nice lady pointed me to MattressTopper, not only because of the better discount (an extra 5%), but because the GlacioTex cooling cover was only available there for some reason. She also told me that, by far, most people are the happiest with the soft version, so I took her advice. I have to agree there now that I have had it for a while. When it arrived, I noticed two things when I opened it: First, was that the cooling cover was not around the entire topper, but sewn in, and it REALLY felt like a quality item. . . it was luxurious. The second thing that I noticed was that it did not smell at all!! I was really expecting to have to air it out for at least a day, but not at all. The only detractions I would say are that it is not immune to getting an area that forms a divot, but at least it is not a super-deep one. Second, Brooklyn Bedding, stop sending so many requests to review. I was just waiting to finish my testing. So anyway, I was quite happy after several weeks, overall, but I still felt like I needed more padding for my shoulder. I wanted to try a dunlop topper, but unfortunately, MattressTopper does not sell them. Frankly, I bought a high-end competitor, Avacado. After buying one of their 3" Eco Organic GOLS-Certified Dunlop, I stacked the two toppers, first with my MattressTopper 3" on top, and the Avacado on the bottom. I slept like that for at least two weeks. It was definitely better with the two toppers. I might suggest that Brooklyn Bedding add a 4", or even 5", latex topper. Then, I switched them, and put the Avacado on top, but I also rotated them 180 degrees, so I got to experience this configuration without any divot. I slept that way for about two weeks. It was not bad, but it was definitely better with the MattressTopper one on top, so I switched it back. Also, the supposedly green, organic, cover on the Avacado has an unpleasant smell, so I am glad that it is back on the bottom. I would rate their topper just a 2. The difference in the covers is huge. . . MattressTopper wins going away. It is also more comfortable to me. So, to sum it up, the MattressTopper latex cover is pretty fantastic. I highly recommend getting the soft, as the person on the phone suggested, but also get the GlacioTex cover. You will not regret it. Since none of these toppers is really easily washed, if at all possible even, I recommend a mattress cover, or two. I actually have an all-sided mattress cover, and inside is my 16" mattress, and both toppers, and closed up. This also guarantees no slipping, not that it seemed like an issue with either topper. Because that is a lot of work to get them stuffed in there, and I would not want to have to take everything out to wash it, I also added a regular fitted-sheet type mattress cover on top of that still. I am pretty neat, but should I ever spill something, it will be so much easier to pull that top waterproof cover off, and wash it. Lastly, I was about to buy my daughter, and son-in-law, a nice mattress, but am holding off. The reason is that they are coming to visit from England, and I am going to give up my bed for a week, and sleep in the guest room (a full), because they will be more comfortable, and they will get to test the toppers. If they like the feel, we will go the route in the next paragraph. After my experience, I feel like I could have bought a MUCH cheaper firm mattress, and just added the toppers, and saved a TON, but still gotten a very similar, nice, feel. Lastly, lastly, for the record, I have no affiliation with either company, and this is a totally unbiased review."
